When we set up Meccanica a few years ago we had a simple goal to design, make and sell things that were made in the UK. This meant scouring the country for small makers who could make anything from jeans to sublimated cycle wear. We even started selling complementary British made products in our old shop from the likes of Brokes saddles to men’s grooming products from Truefitt & Hill.

Our main aim was to encourage people to “Buy British”, support local workers, designers and businesses by offering more choice with a new UK brand.
Over the years we have moved from the shop to concentrate on-line with our own ranges, which still have some esoteric elements such as our limited-edition Moto Guzzi prints and mugs, again designed by a local artist.

The sustainability of our products over time has also become far more important. It is becomming front and centre in our priorities. For instance, we do not buy any material made from Chinese cotton thread, which is difficult when so much of the world supply comes from there. Our existing buttons and label stock is from around europe, so we're using them up rather than re-cycling.
We are sourcing our denim from Europe and the UK, using mills that dye and manufacture responsibly. We have even found a cutting edge businesss that has developed a new indigo dying process that has absolute minimum impact on the environment. This means we get the best quality and also shorten the carbon trail and footprint. This does come with a price tag but we’ve never been fast fashion so once you buy one of our pieces, it will be with you for a very long time whilst wearing into the classic look.
One more guiding principle is that we don’t sell ‘end of line’ to brokers, or heaven forbid, put anything in landfill. Everything is sold to individuals so we run sales for end of line runs.

Our delivery is as local and sustainable as possible too. Our packaging is made from 50% recycled product and can also be recycled again once used.
For fulfilment we use our village Post Office, delivered to by bike. We also deliver locally by bike as well, trying to keep the footprint down and keeping in touch with our customers.
As we are a very small company we don’t have the means to get expensive accreditation but rest assured we are there at the grindstone, making as sure as we possibly can, that what you wear is local, sustainable and the best quality for long and hard wearing.
