Print number 1 of a very limited run of 50.
Entitled Andre Pernette at Full Tilt on His 1/3-Litre-Peugeot-Racer, this is a very limited edition print, hand-finished by the artist Martin Squires. Pernette was racing in the early 1900s on the board tracks in France when he set a record of 94km per hour at Parc du Princess in Paris.
Board track racing for motorcycles was in its infancy at the time and people were enthralled with the spectacle – and totally unaware of the dangers of motor sport. Board track racing continued to develop through the early 1900s, racing on tracks shorter than one mile. It was officially banned in 1919 but the sport only stopped in the late 1920s due to bad publicity causing manufacturers to stop their support. Check out the safety attire of the time – these were real gladiators of the track!
